Electronic components are everywhere
From the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to bed, electronic components are with us. The digital alarm clock wakes us up, and the remote control turns off the television. Both are fitted with electronic components.
What is an electronic component?
It is a basic electronic element and will normally have two electric terminals. By connecting these to a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) an electric circuit is created. These electronic components come in many forms, some of them discrete.
They will be found in so many everyday items as well as items that have a far more significant role in our lives, such as MRI scanners, missiles fired from submarines and electronic prostheses. The presence is so wide that we do not even think about them.
They will come in various types such as terminals and connectors, resistors, capacitors, magnetic devices, networks, switches, integrated circuits and antennas.
They have made our lives so much easier, and indeed help in many cases in the environment. An example is that of a dimmer switch. You need no longer turn on the lights in your lounge to the full capacity, but due to the electronic component placed in the switch, you can control the power supply and only use the amount required for the brightness needed.
Advances in use
Electronic components have enabled us to ensure that in many areas of our life we are more aware of how we use resources in a more efficient way. Motor vehicles are a good example of this, in that nearly all engines are now controlled by electronic components. It is not just about ensuring that the engine runs efficiently so as to reduce fuel consumption, but the presence of electronic components in catalytic converts that ensure the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere is limited to acceptable standards.
In any laptop or desktop we use the PCBs that are present as the driving force behind the workings of the equipment.
