How can I connect 2 external speakers to my flat screen television?

I would like to connect 2 external speakers to my television so I can run the speakers via cables to another place and still listen to the television through the speakers, I have tried various configurations with no success.
My television is a 48 inch flat screen TV with all the usual inlet/outlets and my speakers are of an older generation.

The audio outputs from TVs generally are not powerful enough to drive speakers on their own. They are intended to drive an amplifier (like a home theater system) or amplified speakers.

You need an amplifier.
