What are some good children’s TV shows/movies and books in the Norwegian language?
I am beginning to learn Norwegian because I will be studying abroad in Norway next year.. I figure some easyish to read books and young children television shows or movie will help with my understanding :] Thanks!
One thing that might help is finding Norwegian language versions of international books. For example, if you’re familiar with books about Winnie the Pooh, then “Ole Brumm” won’t be such a leap.
The best known author of children’s books is probably T. Egner. For example “Folk og røvere i Kardemomme by”. He’s also written music to several of his books, which is probably available on Spotify internationally.
One children’s book I like particularly well is “I Morgentåkedalen” (In the Valley of Morning Mist). The language in it is plain, and the illustrations will both impress you and scare you witless. Probably isn’t too easy to get a hold of though.
“Barne TV” means “Children’s TV” and a Youtube search will give you a lot of results. I can’t really name a lot of programs for very young children specifically, but again, “Thomas og vennene hans” equals “Thomas the Tank Engine” and so on. One recent program tries to modernise things a bit and bridge entertainment between age groups: “Krem Nasjonal”. Not a big budget production, but it sometimes make me laugh. (Links: “We Cry To” – Song about the fact than even TV hosts cry. Note the bleeped f***, gotta love liberal Norway. Also “Santa Clause Doesn’t Exist”, note that the girl sings “bulls**t”.)
Then it comes to movies, the must see is “Flåklypa Grand Prix”. It’s a 1975 animation that helps define the archetypical traditional Norway in the same way “My Neighbour Totoro” did for Japan. The director and lead animator Ivo Caprino has made a number of short films about fairytales, shouldn’t be that hard to find on the web.
